Ma Dong-seok joins the stacked cast of Netflix’s Extraction 3 as production ramps up

Korean action powerhouse Ma Dong-seok (also known as Don Lee) has officially boarded Netflix’s Extraction 3, the latest chapter in the high-octane franchise that follows elite mercenary Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth). His agency, Big Punch Entertainment, confirmed the news on August 18, 2026, noting that the actor will appear alongside Hemsworth in the film, which is already in production.
Director Sam Hargrave, who delivered the intense, long-take action of the first two films, is returning to the helm. The screenplay is by David Weil (Citadel), with involvement from the Russo brothers’ AGBO production company. Returning cast members include Idris Elba (as Alcott) and Golshifteh Farahani (as Nik Khan). Newly announced additions to the ensemble are Pierce Brosnan, Joe Taslim, Chi Lewis-Parry, and Sienna Agudong (sometimes listed as Siena Agudong). Specific roles for the new cast—including Ma Dong-seok—and detailed plot points remain under wraps, though the story continues Rake’s dangerous missions against international criminal networks. Filming is underway in Australia (New South Wales South Coast and Sydney), with production expected to run for several months on a notably larger scale.
This marks a significant expansion of Ma Dong-seok’s footprint in the Extraction universe. He previously starred as the title character in the Korean-language spin-off Tygo (also referred to as Extraction: Tygo or Taigo), which is currently in post-production. In that film, directed by Lee Sang-yong (The Roundup series), he plays a former child soldier turned mercenary on a high-stakes rescue and revenge mission. Co-stars include Lee Jin-wook and BLACKPINK’s Lisa (as Ria). Tygo shares the thematic DNA of the main franchise but operates as a standalone story within the broader universe.
At the same time, Ma is deep into production on The Roundup 5 (also known as Crime City 5), the latest entry in Korea’s massive action franchise. Filming began in late May 2026. He reprises his iconic role as “monster detective” Ma Seok-do, now promoted to lead a major metropolitan investigation unit. The story pits him against Lee Kang-tae (played by Kim Jae-young), the mastermind behind an especially brutal criminal operation. Supporting cast includes Seo Hyun-woo, Lee Hak-joo, Baek Hyun-jin, and others, with action specialist Heo Myung-haeng directing. The series has become a consistent box-office phenomenon in Korea, and The Roundup 5 is targeted for a 2027 release.
Ma Dong-seok’s dual track—anchoring one of Korea’s biggest domestic franchises while expanding his global action presence through Netflix’s Extraction universe—underscores his growing status as an international action star. Known for physically imposing performances in films like Train to Busan, the Roundup series, and Eternals (as Gilgamesh), he brings a distinctive, hard-hitting energy that pairs naturally with Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake and the franchise’s trademark brutal, kinetic set pieces. Fans can expect Extraction 3 to lean into even more ambitious action sequences, while Tygo and The Roundup 5 keep his signature style front and center on both local and global screens.
