A Bona Fide Killer (2026) is a South Korean action-comedy-thriller drama series (not a feature film), based on the Kakao Webtoon of the same name. It premiered on MBC on July 31, 2026, and airs Fridays and Saturdays. The series consists of 14 episodes and stars Gong Hyo-jin, Jung Joon-won, and Lee Sang-yi.
Overall Storyline / Synopsis
Yoo Bo-na (Gong Hyo-jin) appears to be an ordinary working mother in her mid-30s. By day she manages Sales Team 3 at Durumi Electronics, navigates office politics, cares for her young daughter, and deals with everyday family life alongside her husband. Behind this ordinary facade, however, she is “Kingfisher,” a legendary sniper and vigilante assassin who eliminates ruthless criminals who have escaped legal justice.
After three years of maternity leave, Bo-na returns to her dual existence, struggling to maintain the delicate balance between motherhood, marriage, and her high-stakes secret missions. One wrong move risks exposing everything she has built.
Her husband, Kwon Tae-seong (Jung Joon-won), is a dedicated investigative journalist who has long been fascinated by (and previously pursued) the mysterious figure known as Kingfisher. Unaware that the vigilante he is chasing is his own wife, he grows increasingly determined to uncover the truth. At the same time, ace detective Lee Dong-jin (Lee Sang-yi) of the Violent Crimes Unit relentlessly investigates the same string of killings, firmly believing that justice must be delivered through the legal system rather than by a self-appointed assassin.
Bo-na is supported by a small network of allies, including the experienced Kim Bong-pal (Sung Dong-il), a specialist in making deaths look accidental. As past events—particularly a pivotal Christmas incident involving Kingfisher 15 years earlier—begin to surface, and as both her husband’s investigation and the police net tighten, Bo-na finds herself caught between protecting her family, continuing her personal form of justice, and simply surviving.
Key Themes & Tone
The series blends sharp action sequences with domestic comedy and emotional tension. It explores extreme work-life balance, the morality of vigilantism versus the rule of law, identity, and the secrets people keep from those closest to them. Gong Hyo-jin’s dual performance—calm, efficient mother and cold, precise sniper—anchors the show’s mix of thrills and everyday relatability.
Note: The series is still airing as of mid-August 2026, so full episode-by-episode spoilers are best avoided if you plan to watch. Early episodes have performed strongly in the ratings, climbing steadily and occasionally peaking in double digits during major action sequences.
